Monteverdi’s groundbreaking Vespers are regarded as a milestone of music history. The variety of both style and structure achieved by the composer was unique for the time. It is an ebullient work, at once prayerful and virtuosic, which freely explores the space between sumptuous grandeur and sensitive intimacy. The Vespers reveals Monteverdi to be a man of both the church and the theatre; the work is a perfect synthesis of these two expressions of his genius. Conducted by Matthias Maute with soloists Myriam Leblanc, Magali Simard-Galdès, Josée Lalonde, Ian Sabourin, Antonio Figueroa, Nils Brown, Thomas Vinals, Clayton Kennedy, and William Kraushaar. With Ensemble Caprice and the Ensemble vocal Arts-Québec.
